their secret sauce that's more important than the polling is that mr. romney is winning independents. so there. romney has this thing in the bag. carl rove, for the republicans this year, he took to "the wall street journal" this week to patiently explain to the people who don't understand that these numbers that look so bad for mr. romney do not matter or they are wrong. or they are wrong and they don't noe matter. because he says democrats are not winning early voting by enough. and he says the polls make assumptions about turnout that he describes as absurd. it also describes some stuff that makes him believe romney is going to win like crowd size and closing arguments. that shows that mitt romney is totally going to win this thing. both are trying to convince the country it's obvious they are going to win. it's worth listening to the arguments and checking to see if the arguments are based in good sense. but honestly, it's also worth recognizing that every campaign on both sides does this every time. for example, here is how this particular phenomenon looked the day before the election in

nominee as we close in on the election day. mr. romney has been spending a tremendous amount of time in the last couple of days talking about his desire to be a bipartisan president, reach across the aisle and deal with democrats to meet the challenge that nation faces, challenges he argues that mr. obama has not been able to meet and been too partisan and unwilling to meet with republicans on it. in the event in richmond, he singled out the house leader eric cantor and asked when is the last time you met with the president? cantor said it was a year ago. romney said i will not do that. i will meet often with the democrats and create the type of bipartisan agreements that move the country forward. he is making the argument that it's time for big change. borrowed rhetoric from the 2008 obama campaign that he says the president hasn't stuck to. he will wrap up the third event in virginia beach, virginia today. fully ten more battleground states that he plans to visit between now and tuesday night. he will wrap it up with a big speech in new hampshire, where he has a vacation home. that

. but the desperate kitchen sink politics don't end there. mr. romney's pushing the widely debunk claim that president obama is waging a war on welfare. it's the same lame story with his comments about jeep shipping jobs overseas. that's all ugly enough. but then there's this. he's bringing out the king birther, donald trump, to make robo calls and campaign stops in key swing states and the ugliness extends beyond the walls. they have taken to the airwaves with this low piece of political slime. >> obama claimed in a muslim country that america is not a christian nation, said congress had better things to do when it reaffirmed in god we trust. better things than trusting god? like what? >> this is what a desperate campaign looks like. this is what it looked like when a candidate will go to anything that he can to win. no matter how objectionable, no matter how ugly. joining me now is richard wolffe, vice president and executive editor of msnbc.com. and michelle cottle, washington correspondent for newsweek and "the daily beast." thank you both for being here. >> thanks, rev. >> michelle, it's not a su

has mr. romney ahead by 3.8 points. so that's the 7:00 hour. and then in the 8:00 hour, polls will be closing in these 18 states. of these states, again, there will be three that we're going to be watching most closely. florida, pennsylvania, and new hampshire. the "real clear politics" polling average right now in florida has romney ahead. in pennsylvania the polling average says it is president obama who's ahead by 4.6 points. in new hampshire, again, president obama ahead with a 1.3 lead. that's the 8:00 hour. at 9:00, we'll have polls closed in all those places, and the blinking states here will be the ones that are closing. 14 states mostly in the midwest and the south. of the -- southwest, excuse me. of these 14 states, the states everybody's going to be watching are three. colorado, michigan, and wisconsin. here's what it looks like right now in those states. polling average in the state of colorado, it's very close. president obama ahead by less than a point. in michigan, it's president obama ahead by three points. and in wisconsin, the polling average has mr. obama ah

around the world. confidence in american government. an attempt by mr. romney to say that not only is he ready to run the country, but he's ready to run it in a way with a bipartisan hand, something he's been talking about for the last couple of weeks. as all candidates tend to do despite all the partisanship, looking for swing voters. mr. romney recognizes that it is very, very close in ohio and new hampshire, the polls all indicate it's quite close. romney's senior advisors acknowledge that as he said today, just a moment ago, the door is open and it's going to take a lot more work to walk through it to victory. for that, he needs people to rally and get out the vote, which is always what the final 72 hours is all about. >> in these time hours action the candidate and his staff working really around the clock. it's nonstop, one event to the next to the next. what is the mood like with the staff, with the candidates' family? what's it like on the trail with them? >> reporters and candidates in campaigns always have a natural friction. but there is something of a disaster mentality that
